Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
